A calculator estimates the tax from the published rates and the figures you enter. Sri Lanka Customs assesses the actual duty on a declaration. The two can differ, and the difference usually has one of the causes below. Treat the calculator as a close estimate, and the Customs assessment as the final figure.
The usual reasons
How to compare
Ask your clearing agent for the assessment and compare it line by line with the calculator's breakdown: customs duty, surcharge, excise, luxury tax, PAL, SSCL, VAT and VEL. The line that differs usually points straight at the reason above. If the difference is large on one line, check the class, the engine size and the value first.
If you think the assessment is wrong
Ask the agent to explain the basis of each line. Differences of class or value can be discussed with Customs through the agent, and the written assessment gives the reasons.
The figures on this site are estimates. The rates and gazettes behind them are listed on the calculator page, last checked Oct 17, 2026.
